Becker never got used to the waiting at an anomaly site.

Never knowing what would come through it, or what was on the other side.

He tried to stay alert all the time, meanwhile telling his men what to do.

After a while the gun would feel heavy in his arms and little annoyances like hunger, thirst or the need for a pee would creep up on him.

Today the anomaly was in the Forest of Dean, deja vu for some of the team members.

Nothing had come through.

Yet.

They were about to send a team in when, suddenly, a shadow appeared.

A figure.

A human figure.

Out of the anomaly came a man.

And the man was Captain Tom Ryan.

Becker was at the debriefing in Lester’s office.

After a medical check up Ryan was asked to tell his story.

But there was not much of a story to tell.

After Ryan had gone through the anomaly into the Permian with Nick Cutter and Helen Cutter, he had been separated from them during the fight between the gorgonopsid and the future predator.

And then the anomaly had been gone.

And there was nowhere for him to go.

He didn’t know how long he’d stayed in that barren, prehistoric era.

But now, thank God, he was back.

Yes, Captain Ryan was back.

Lester had reinstated him to the team.

At first Becker and Ryan had squabbled a lot, trying to boss each other around.

But then they’d both realised they had a lot in common.

They could learn from each other, complement each other.

From fighting together they started working together.

And then they became lovers.

It only took a short while before Ryan moved in with Becker.

Now they were together 24/7.

They shared leadership, guns, showers, cars, secrets, food and a bed.

One day Becker realised his relationship with Ryan felt so natural. That they were meant for each other.

He knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with this gorgeous man.

Soon it would be six months since Ryan had moved in.

Becker decided to surprise his partner.

He wanted to express his love and his dedication to this man.

With a friendship ring in his hand he stood in front of the bathroom, whilst Ryan was taking a shower.

Becker swallowed.

What if Ryan said no? What if he was going too fast? That Ryan couldn’t commit himself to somebody so soon?

But what they had felt so good.

No, he had to do this, he had to take the risk of rejection.

He took a deep breath and opened the bathroom door.

In the steam, evaporating from the hot water, he couldn’t see his lover right away.

He saw some clothes scattered on the floor.

He saw Ryan’s dog tag lying on the sink.

Strange, Ryan never took off his dog tag. It had belonged to an American soldier, who died in Afghanistan. Ryan had been his closest friend.

He stepped into the bathroom and walked towards the door of the shower cubicle.

Hastily he took off his own clothes, holding on to the ring.

“Ryan, I’m coming in,” he said.

“No, please, don’t!” he heard Ryan say.

But Becker had already opened the shower door.

When he saw the person inside, he went into shock and dropped the ring.

“My god, I didn’t want you to see me like this,” Ryan whispered, trying to cover chest and genitals.

It was Ryan’s voice Becker heard.

But the person speaking those words was not Tom Ryan.

The person he was looking at, who he had loved in the past months, with whom he’d shared government and private secrets, that person was….

Helen Cutter.
