Matt Anderson’s flat was barren and impersonal.
No family photos, no knick-knacks, not even a book that could tell what taste its owner had.
The flat was more or less a refuge, though.
Here he didn’t have to pretend or deny.
His father had warned him not to get too attached.
To keep a distance, to keep it all a secret.
But it was so difficult.
He wanted something for himself.
The doorbell rang.
“I’m so pleased to see you,” he said when he opened the door. “Come in.”
Captain Becker entered his sanctuary, carrying a bottle of wine, smiling.
