Here's a recap of James Murray's scenes in Defiance 2.01. Be prepared to be spoiled! *g*
Opening scene:
We see somebody putting hand creme on his hands.
The voice-over part (a special announcement speech broadcasted on TV) tells a lot about the new mayor: "I appreciate the nice things in life. I take no pride and accept no shame in this. I treat small luxuries like hand creme valuable indulgences to treasure. My moments of civilisation. See, what I don't understand, when I accepted the role of provisional mayor eight and a half months ago, I was apprehensive. I imagined those wild west movies my father was so fond of. A town full of anarchists, malcontents, savages. I run my wars. Put simply: Defiance is paradise. Look around you. In any direction. And you'll find indescribable beauty. This is a town of people who know how to have a good time. When the time comes to roll up the sleeves and get down to the nitty-gritty, no one works harder for a living. And that hard work has turned Defiance into a bonafide boomtown. And I predict, those among you who, like me, enjoy the nice things, it shall soon happen, in abundance. But the real inspiration, an illusive element that makes this town so unique, is your inclusiveness. Humans and Votans living side by side as friends, lovers, family, is truly inspiring. In my time as mayor I've worked every single day to live up to these standards the people of Defiance have set. Together we reduce crime. We've rebuild the stasis net. By nationalising the Gulanide mines we have doubled wages and tripled productivity. And now I'd like to thank my colleagues at the Earth Republic. In particular Viceroy Mercado, who's made the long trip from New York to celebrate with us today. Thanks to their generous financial assistance and the long delayed (…. can't hear what he's saying here). Now I know you're all into to get to the party, so without further ado, allow me to wish you a happy and prosperous Founders Day. Defiance."
After the speech, Bioman Churchill helps him with his cape, whilst Pottinger is speaking to his boss, Viceroy Mercado. Mercado thinks Pottinger is a show-off, but smart. It shows they're not the best of friends. Churchill asks him: "The Viceroy is a powerful man. Why do you keep making him mad". Pottinger's answer:"Mercado only respects people he hates. You should remember that, Churchill. Because it's true and useful."
Second scene:
Walking into the NeedWant charming up Amanda Rosewater, calling her Madame Mayor. Amanda is running the NeedWant now, hoping her sister Kenya will return.
Pottinger tries to persuade Amanda to work for him, to keep Defiance peaceful and productive.
Before leaving he charms up Stahma Tarr, by telling her she looks lovely.
Third scene:
Niles Pottinger is saying goodbye to his boss, Viceroy Mercado.
Two of Rafe's miners are caught painting anti-Earth Republic graffiti, so Pottinger has them arrested (and he orders Chuchill to dump them into the woods, where one of them is eaten by a Hellbug).
The scene shows Mercado IS Pottinger's boss, trying to humiliate him, saying Pottinger's smug smile will be permanently removed from his smug face someday if the Earth Republic loses Defiance.
Rafe McCawley tries to have the two men who were just arrested, pardoned. But Pottinger answers he'd let Rafe be free to be useful in the mines, but he could have taken everything away from him.
Fourth scene:
Amanda storms into Pottinger's office and accuses him of purposefully trying to kill the two miners.
Pottinger denies and shows her some video footage of the men escaping, whilst Churchill takes a long leak (I guess big guys have big bladders *g*).
He agrees in pardoning the brother who survived.
He keeps charming up Amanda. She finally accepts the job of Chief of Staff, for the moment.
Fifth scene:
Pottinger has installed hidden cameras in Amanda's place, so he watches her while she smokes up drugs and falls asleep.
