“Where are you taking me?” Nick asked, almost whiningly.
“You’ll see,” Stephen answered, whilst driving on the M3. They were in Hampshire and Nick had no idea where they were going. “I know you don’t like it when you’re not in command, but trust me, I’m taking you somewhere nice.”
“Oh, I trust you,” Nick said in his Scottish accent and he winked at Stephen.
Stephen reacted by smiling half-heartedly.
“I mean that, Stephen,” Nick said softly. “I know about Helen and her affairs with several students. And I know she slept with you.”
Stephen almost stepped on the brake. He was shocked. “You know? I.. I... I feel so terribly guilty about that.”
“Don’t,” Nick said and he touched the younger man’s shoulder in a reassuring gesture. “I know how Helen is and how manipulative she can be. Our marriage was over a long time ago.”
“But still, I shouldn’t have got involved with a married woman,” Stephen whispered.
“It’s in the past. So let’s forget about it,” Nick insisted. “Let’s have fun today, without anomalies, dangerous creatures, running around or shooting.”
“Nothing wrong with shooting,” Stephen grinned, trying to lighten the atmosphere.
Nick laughed. “I hope you’re not taking me to a shooting range.”
“Don’t worry,” Stephen said and turned the car from the motorway near Stockbridge. After driving for another ten minutes they stopped at the River Test.
“We’re going fly fishing,” Stephen explained. “It’s very relaxing and meditative. We’ll also have a picnic around lunch time and before we drive back to London we can have a meal at The Three Cups Inn in Stockbridge.”
“I’ve never been fly fishing before, but it sounds wonderful,” Nick answered. He looked at Stephen and gently touched his arm. “Thank you. I needed the time away from the ARC and all its work, stress... and Lester.”
Stephen laughed. “Lester seems to have a thing against scientists, especially Scottish scientists.”
“Well, let’s not talk about the L-word today then,” Nick suggested.
“Deal.”
They got out of the car and Stephen started unloading the fishing gear from the back of the Hilux.
“You’ll have to help me here,” Nick said. “The only time I’ve been fishing was when I was a little tyke. I used a rod my father had made.”
They spent the next twenty minutes getting their gear ready by preparing the lines and tying artificial flies to the fly rod.
“We can fish from the bank, so we don’t have to wade in the river with hip-boots or waders,” Stephen said.
Soon both men were entrapped in holding and looking at their fly rod. The scenery was beautiful and restful.
Nick felt all the tension leaving his body. He let his thoughts go into different directions, whilst enjoying the warmth of the sun and the tranquillity of his surroundings.
This was wonderful. He was enthralled when Stephen caught his first trout. Expertly he reeled up the loose fly line by applying light pressure on the outgoing line using his fingers. Soon he landed the fish so he wouldn’t over-exhaust it. It was Stephen’s intention to release the trout again, but if it was too exhausted it could die easily.
After a while it was Nick’s turn, when he felt a soft tugging at his fly rod. With Stephen giving him calm instructions he managed to get the trout on the bank.
Stephen wet his hands, swiftly removed the hook and immediately returned the fish back into the water. He supported the trout until it stabilized and swam off on its own.
Nick’s face was beaming. “This is amazing!”
Stephen smiled. “Time for lunch.”
They sat down on a blanket Stephen had spread out and they had sandwiches, salad and fruit, while drinking sparkling water.
“I almost put a bottle of cider in the picnic basket, but I have to drive us home,” Stephen said.
“Home? I don’t want to go home,” Nick sighed, as he stretched onto the blanket. “Can’t we stay? It’s so peaceful here.”
“The inn where we’re going to have dinner has rooms too. We could stay there for the night and drive back to London early in the morning.”
“I’d love that. That would be great.”
The rest of the afternoon they spent fishing. Mostly in silence, sometimes talking about their university careers and their personal lives, but avoiding all topics concerning anomalies and dinosaurs.
Nick secretly watched Stephen. The younger man was in his element. He looked so handsome standing on the bank, his arm muscles flexing and stretching with every move he made, his blue eyes radiant with joy.
Nick felt very happy. Both he and Stephen were at peace with themselves and with each other after a long time of tension and stress. This felt good. He hoped it stayed that way.
When they’d finally packed and were driving towards the inn in Stockbridge, Nick yawned.
“We should do this more often,” he said. “I feel tired, but relaxed and rested at the same time.”
“It gives you the opportunity to contemplate and get things in perspective,” Stephen added. “So, whenever we get the chance, let’s go for it.”
At the inn they learned there was only one double bedroom left. They looked at each other.
“We’ve been sleeping in tiny tents together a lot, so a double bed should be a luxury. I don’t have any problems with it,” Nick stated.
So they decided to stay at the inn.
They had a very tasty dinner. They had salmon and a nice white wine. Afterwards they spent some time in the pub, tasting a few different ales.
When they retreated to their bedroom, they were both a bit tipsy. With the complimentary toiletries they freshened up and snuggled against each other under the duvet, only wearing their boxer shorts for nightwear.
Nick sighed contently. “This is heaven. I’d never thought I’d end up in bed with you.”
Stephen sniggered. “We have to seize the opportunity then,” and he started nibbling on Nick’s ear.
“Mmmm,” was all Nick said. He was tempted and frightened at the same time.
Stephen was so gorgeous. He didn’t want to spoil their relationship as friends by having something that might be a one night stand.
“Stop thinking, Nick. Just enjoy it.”
“You know me too well,” Nick smiled and then he let go.
Their lovemaking was wonderful.
In a way it was weird to make love to a man.
The anatomy was familiar, but unknown at the same time.
Their needs were similar, but a discovery at the same time.
Stephen’s body was muscular and trained, but soft at the same time.
His smell was masculine, but sweet at the same time.
And his touch was demanding, but caring at the same time.
Nick enjoyed it to the fullest and, completely satisfied, they snuggled even closer afterwards.
“I’m the happiest man on this planet, because I’ve just landed the biggest catch ever,” Nick whispered and kissed Stephen.
“Same here.”
Both men had their first restful, dreamless sleep in a long time.

Date: 2011-06-04 06:34 am (UTC)I don't know much about fly fishing, but I know it's very relaxing. My father loved it and I tried it once or twice as a child. Typical for most girls I didn't want to touch the bait or the fish. :D
